I was reading through Miss Jessie's: Creating a Successful Business from Scratch - Naturally and was reflecting on all the great books that have been written in recent years about my favorite topic - curly hair. Earlier this year, CURLS founder Mahisha Dellinger published Against All Odds: From the Projects to the Penthouse and G.G. Adshens's Curly Girl Method Top Recipe hit the shelves in March."
It's an exciting time in our curly world, with an endless appetite for information and education about the process. It's also a time when many of the entrepreneurs who helped shape the industry are reflecting on their journeys. As far as I'm concerned, you can't read too much on the topic. There are books for kids and books for men. For budding mixtresses, there are hair recipe books. For history buffs, there are books that explore the movement's history.
So I thought that theres never been a bether time to kick off NaturallyCurly's Curly Book Group!
The list of authors reads like a who's who in the curly world - stylists, bloggers and brand founders who have helped fuel the movement. Some of the books are full of useful tips and tricks, while others explore the history of the natural hair movement. And some are memoirs that chronicle the unlikely success stories of the best-known curl brands and provide tips to other entrepreneurs hoping to become the next Miss Jessie's.
NaturallyCurly was entering its 4th year in business when Lorraine Massey kicked off the curly publishing boom 13 years ago with Curly Girl: The Handbook. This book became the Bible for curly girls around the world. The book was packed with unique and fail-proof hair-care methods, inspiration, and an empowering pro-curl attitude. The book created a new vernacular in the curl world, and the "CG" method - thanks to NaturallyCurly.com's evangelists - spread like wild fire. It helped create the no-poo culture we live in today, where sulfate-free shampoos abound.
Later that year, Curl Queen Ouidad's pubsliehd Curl Talk in which she shared her top curl tips. A year later, as the natural hair movement took root, stylist to the stars Natural hair expert Anthony Dickey's published Hair Rules: The Ultimate Hair-care Guide for Women with Kinky, Curly or Wavy Hair. Stylist to the stars Diane Da Costa followed with Textured Tresses: The Ultimate Guide to Maintaining and Styling Natural Hair.
The past three years have been especially prolific for curly authors. Blogger Nikki Walton of CurlyNikki fame - a member of our TextureMedia family - made a huge splash with Better than Good Hair: The Curly Girl Guide to Healthy, Gorgeous, Natural hair! She exemplified how the online world has become the authority on curls and coils. And this month, Tanya Wright from "Orange is the New Black" published I Found God In My Hair: 98 Spiritual Principles I Learned From My Relationship With My Hair.
Here are few of the books that have made the world a better place for curly girls.
