Curly Hair Reading List

I had the wonderful opportunity to be interviewed for a new book that Miss Jessie’s’ Titi and Miko Branch are writing about their curl journey. It was a great chance to reflect on all that’s happened over the past 15 years, and the pioneers that have made it happen.

Their book is the latest in a series of books about the natural hair explosion, and how it has transformed the hair-care industry. Actress Tanya Wright of True Blood and Orange is the New Black fame recently completed “I Found God in My Hair: 91 Spiritual Lessons I’ve Learned from My relationship With My Hair.” We attended the launch party for the updated version of “Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America” by Ayana Byrd and Lori Tharpe. And Nikki Walton’s book “Better than Good Hair,” has become a bestseller. And of course, there’s the bible for the curly girl, Lorraine Massey’s “The Curly Girl Handbook.”

There’s probably few other examples of how a small group of passionate women have helped reshape the way we feel about our hair. I can see a day when there are sociology classes about the Natural/Curly Hair Movement.
